A patient of the 20th-century English pediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott once said to him, “All I ask you to do is to help me to commit suicide for the right reason instead of for the wrong reason.” These difficult words could be applied to the behavior of large groups within society that develop a sadomasochistic and duplicitous relationship with an intolerable political situation and do not do enough to change it.
