American Psychological Association Review of Books

Eran Rolnik writes an exceedingly entertaining and gripping historical account of this

period, exploring the incorporation of psychoanalytic principles while the new systems for

education, communal living, health care, and government were being established. This “new

Jew” was designing an untested enterprise of self-determination, which coalesced with

Freud’s radical understanding of the unconscious and the inner psyche at a remarkable time

and place in world history. Freud in Zion: Psychoanalysis and the Making of Modern Jewish

Identity builds suspense even though we already know what happens next.
